    Okay, I fixed it! I enter in the -advmethods in advanced and that got me one to work on straight away! Apparently this is quite a common problem, so if you're having problems with your Folding@Home, then try that tag and it'll probably work. Now I'm using my full CPU and Folding away!

    King Mook Mook

    thanks for joining! and glad you got it fixed!

    you can look at your log file to see the status of the current unit you're working on. once you complete a unit, could take 12 hours or so, depending on the unit, then you'll show up on the stats page

    I seem to remember a rumour not long after the iPad 2 event that iPhone 5 would be delayed until late summer / autumn. Perhaps all these rumours are falling into place and we won't see iPhone 5 until after the summer.

    I have been using the new four finger gestures enabled with 4.3.x and find them to be a great in combination with the current multitasking implementation. I think what is depicted is either a jail broken add-on, or an early tested and rejected interface.

    If you have a student ADC membership, and still have your hardware discount assetyou can purchase it for $99 (EDU) at the ADC Store.

    Alas, I do not.

    One thing that i hadnt considered until i got to use it first hand was the whole issue of latency. I got a 64GB VZW model (and while i was origianlly going to get the ATT version, i figured i'd just jailbreak and go the miWi route.. so I am gonna keep the vzw one)..

    Anyway, ive used an att one and a vzw one side by side both with abotu 3 bars of signal and the vzw one smoked the att one on response time alone. the VZW was almost done loading the whole page before the att one even begun. They ultimately ended up finishing close to one another, and i am sure on larger uploads and downloads teh faster bandwidth would be a plus, but for most browsing, having a faster response time is better.... and the VZW definitely wins in this area.

    Can we please make a sticky about this? It seems like this question is asked at least 3 times a month.

    Except that it won't cut down on the posts, they have that information in the FAQ and yet it doesn't help

    Cons - smaller networks wouldn't survive; most niche networks would become less focused in order to appeal to a wider demographic; diversity in program would be jeopardized.

    And how is that a con? The reason cable companies say they charge so much is because they give 100s of channels. If there were only 40, they couldn't hide behind that.

    And since when is the goal of business to protect the undesirable? If 10 chain restaurants open in your town and nobody eats at 2 of them, should the other 8 raise their prices and give the overage to the 2 nobody likes? No, the 2 should shut down. No sense in having a business if nobody wants the business. Cable channels are a business.

    There was a study a bit ago that showed that complexity drastically reduced participation in altruistic activities, while simplicity -- especially exact instructions on how to participate -- drastically increased participation.

    I think that's applies here. Using a Mac is so simple, generally speaking, that the folding@home pages seem obtuse in comparison. The pages are all ugly, and instructions are unclear, and files seem to be missing that instruction pages reference.

    Well put, the instructions are way out of date, hard to follow for beginners and make references that are no longer valid.

    To increase participation I recommend that a very clear communicator make a new thread (perhaps a sticky) with *dead simple* step by step instructions w/screenshots on how to install and turn it on (circa 2010). Maybe even a screen flow that just shows exactly how to it, hosted on a service with crystal clear video like vimeo.com. Get our mirror neurons goin', yaknow?

    Case in point, I'm having my own issues. Where exactly is the screen saver? On http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/OSX/OSX.html, it talks about it, and say to grab it off the download page, but I just can't find it. Makes me feel dumb, which is hardly what you want in a social endeavor.

    As far as the screen saver, it no longer exists, which is why you can't find it. Sometime in the past it was deemed detrimental to folding because it was using up valuble resources the could be used for folding. And we all go through a 'feeling dumb' stage after which you go through an 'oh well I'll do the best I can' stage, which lasts as long as you continue to fold.

    Beyond my notebooks, I also have 2 8 Core Mac Pro's I'd like to put into the game, but I really only want the processor power being used when they're idle. I need that power to myself at the other times. Screen saver or idle time processing is perfect.

    It would be great to have your Mac Pros folding and I understand your concern. The clients are supposed to ease up as other process use more cpu power but I have read where this doesn't always seem to work as for someone using video software etc. I suppose you could try and see if it works for you and if not... There should be new cpu software sometime in the future that "may" work better, but we will have to see.

    Second, I did install just the basic install of http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/release/Folding@home-OSX10.5-6.29.3.pkg.zip in the meantime. Activated the client in System Preferences, and hit the enable button. When does this thing activate? It's not showing any activity in Activity Monitor yet. I guess maybe this does idle time processing w/o any visual feedback?

    It sounds like it might not be running properly, did you set up a username and team? I'm running a different client that doesn't work through the prefs pane but I'll try to get back to you with something that might help, in the meantime try here (http://foldingforum.org/viewforum.php?f=6&sid=14fc4044e9c0e1c8ce9bbf6bba791c1b). Good luck! Oh I forget to mention that they are having trouble getting enough work units out for everyone to crunch, maybe that is why your client isn't running...

    They actually confirmed that one. Turns out you can polish it :D

    Yes. Jamie got his to a mirror shine. Almost looked like a marble :p

    But back to Office. I still prefer the Windows version however the Mac version is starting to grow on me. Were it not for MS CRM that I use at work, I could finally be rid of Windows once and for all. But, alas, no dice. Love how CRM works ONLY with IE.

    I bought a Verizon iPad because I have an AT&T iPhone. I figured that if one doesn't work, the other will. I saw no need to get two devices on the same network.

    But go ahead, explain to me why that's stupid, since I clearly don't get it and I'm ignorant.

    its stupid bc u pay twice for a mobile plan lol why not just tether ... oh wait u can't in the us without additional costs xD nvm

    ...

    sry but i still don't rly understand how it works in the US. there is an "AT&T" iPad, i thought they come unlocked, can't u just go to any store and buy a iPad "3G" and use whatever simcard u want? thats at least how it is here

    Okay, I'll agree with you about not being able to "custom" build your own Macintosh. It has drawbacks and advantages. Mostly advantages in my opinion. Apple has always made systems that perform more predictably. Simply put, the software (OS) and the hardware work better hand in hand. Although Microsoft has done pretty good with XP, it does some neat stuff, but I still prefer OS X. However, even though you can't build your own Mac, it is very easy to add after market upgrades such as hard drives, RAM, PCI cards, etc etc...at least in the towers. Obviously, the iMac is for the person who does not care to go inside their computer, they just want something that turns on and works. Today, most of the hardware is pretty interchangeable.

    In the future I'd like to see the hardware makers standardize even more, so maybe all the PCI cards could work in both systems without the need for different ROMS, but that will probably never happen, due to the stark differences in how Apple and Intel/AMD design the MB.

    I don't know about the 2 processor limit on the G4. I always thought if the processor supported SMP, then you could go to town.

    I never remember seeing any PCs with USB until after Apple released the original iMac. If they did, they sure were not using it much. In fact, they still mostly use the PS/2 ports. Maybe because the PC liked to crash back in the Win98 days. USB was definitely plug and pray for them back then.

    I personally don't mind what Apple charges, since they make a product that works. I never go a week without hearing someone crying about something being wrong with their PC and Windows.

    During normal use, my new PowerMac has a very consistent and normal sounding hum.

    But sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night, and when idle and not sleeping, the PM's sound becomes unconsistent and goes up and down in about 10 second intervals.

    It will be running, and it will sound like it's about to go to sleep...there will be a slight "click" sound, and then you can hear fans wind down and get quiet...then suddenly it "clicks" again, and the fans wind up and get increasingly louder.

    It then continues to do this quiet-to loud-to quiet process indefinitely until I begin using it again.

    It sounds like an interchanging powering down, then powering up, kind of thing. It's hard to explain.

    It sort of does this (imagine the text below to represent the level of sound):

    ````````*click*----------..................*click*...........-----------``````````
    (not sure if that makes any sense, but it's the best I could do).
    It kind've sounds like it's trying to sleep, but doesn't quite get there, then powers up again...waits, then tries again.
    I've got it set for my 56k to disconnect at 55 minutes of idle, and my PM to sleep at 1 hour of inactvity. I've noticed since I've had it that neither one has ever happened on its own.
    Any help/info/advice is greatly appreciated!
    Is it normal for it to take 45 minutes to export a 9-minute video via quicktime? I'm working off a desktop OSX and am a total novice at movie making.
    Thunderbolt just moved up on my list when I saw some of the new products coming out (http://www.sonnettech.com/news/nab2011/index.html).
    Especially Gigabit Ethernet is a big plus for me, I was thinking Apple might be doing one but in case they're not then Sonnet seems to be working on one as well. Although the adapter pictured there is unfortunately very bulky so it's not a great choice to bring on the road. But it would be great for home to do backups quickly (I usually do a complete image once in a while and this would really help).
    Also the external chassis in which you can just put PCI-e cards is really unprecedented for laptops. If the pricing eventually comes down to around $100 I'd definitely get one although I'm afraid it will be a lot more.
    I'm going to San Francisco tomorrow and my question how: Do I tell the difference between a corporate store and a retail partner? And is the information identifiable on the Verizon site? (I've found the store locator, but it's not helping)
    TIA
    Call now and check pricing/have them hold one for you. if you wait till tomorrow I doubt you'll get one. just a guess.
    they do a little but not to the extent of background processes, and having 20 push apps takes no more battery life than having 1, unless you get very frequent pushes from them of course.
    Push Notifications are when your phone automatically checks for updates, alerts etc. without you having to open the app right? I guess it's just misleading to me because when I hear "push" notifications, I think of something that happens when I push the app or open it up.
    Thanks for the fast response!
