For some context on the new Passat, read a review of the new Jetta (like this one (http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/car/10q3/2011_volkswagen_jetta-first_drive_review)) to see how the "decontenting" was done.
In the case of the Jetta, the decent 5-cylinder base engine was bumped up into the optional category. The "new" base engine is the 115hp SOHC 4-banger that is not fundamentally different from the engines that powered Jettas and Golfs in the 1980s. No joke! They still make the Mk 4 Golf in Mexico, and this engine is pulled straight from the Mk 4 production line.
The Golf/Jetta/Passat used to be closer to an E-Class or 3 Series than a Civic or Accord. But this shift radically repositions them as a run-of-the-mill grocery getter. Volkswagen wants to more than double their US sales in the next few years...
...as I said before, I really hope they don't ruin the Golf too.

Hi all,
Just added a 4.8 GHz i7-2600k folding -bigadv (~ 49000 ppd) to my MacRumors contribution.
This is being helped by:
3.8 GHz i7-860 folding -smp 7 -bigadv ~ 22000 ppd
2.8 GHz i7-860 folding -smp 6 ~ 8000 ppd
3* GTX 460 ~ 32000 ppd combined
1* GTX 430 ~ 4000 ppd
All running in wine under Ubuntu 10.04
Hopefully I can maintain a reasonably stable 100k ppd, at least until the weather gets warmer when the graphics cards will have to stop.
Rob

If you're 47 you were ~23years old when AIDS hit the headlines. When did your 'youth' end? Oh and I'm pretty sure herpes was about, but it shows how bad sex education either state or parental must've been back then!.
Yes, diseases have been around for a long time, but keep in mind that diseases change over time. Part of the problem nowadays is, despite better medicinal technology, there are more dangerous disease. Why? Antibiotics as we know them haven't been around long. When first discovered, they were considered a miracle and used to treat everything and anything. They were even used preventatively. This resulted in the decimation of strains of disease that couldn't protect themselves, but left resistant strains which were free to reproduce and grow exponentially. Soon enough, you have an entire disease that is resistant to antibiotics.
If you've ever wondered why doctors require you to finish a prescription even if you feel better, this is the reason. If you don't, you potentially leave resistant strains to carry on. Same reason doctors today don't use antibiotics unless necessary and even then, very specifically targeted ones as generalized antibiotics result in the same problem. Today, a simple staphylococcus infection can kill you. Thirty years ago, you more than likely could have cured it with a few days of antibiotics. (some more info (http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/1998/698_bugs.html))
Another major problem occurs with viruses as even today there is very little that can be done to combat them, not just HIV, but any virus partially due to the fact that they simply don't conform to the rules of "life" as we know it. Besides which, they can do things that no other living organism can (such as create DNA from RNA). There are methods that can slow viruses or even cause dormancy in them, but for the most part, there is no way to kill a virus.
So yes, diseases have been around a long time, but you can't necessarily compare an STD today to an STD thirty years ago in the same way you can't take last years' flu vaccine for this year's flu season.
Sorry for the aside, just wanted to clarify a bit.

it crashes regularly, even on macrumors or on the apple site!
just make it work!
No it doesn't. Seriously, I've visited this site zillions of times and Safari has never crashed on it.
As for resizable text areas, it's a good idea in theory. Too many "web designers" think they are designing for print...the user is supposed to have control over how things look. That's one of the whole points of the web; everything should be as relative as possible.

I wonder if there will be a critical point where enough states get rid of it so the rest follow?
I don't think so, at least not in the forseeable future. Some states will probably keep the death penalty for many, many years. Also, the federal government still uses the death penalty in certain cases, though only three people have been excecuted by the federal government since the '60s. The US military also have captial punisment on the books, though again they have not executed anyone for over 40 years.
It's interesting to note that Michigan is the only state that constitutionally forbids the death penalty - all other death penalty bans are statutory.

Yeah, we seem to have reversed the drop. The trend is really obvious if you look at our weekly and monthly charts on extremeoverclocking:
http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=3446
I've added a second i7 2600k for another 50k PPD and a new quad core MBP is coming tomorrow, but I don't intend to use that for folding long term.
Also, we've just entered another cold snap here, so the GPUs can run for another week or so!
Keep it up!
Rob
that's awesome! you'll have to let us know how that quad mbp does! i wonder how much wattage it would use also?
but yeah, you and whiterabbit are carrying us right now!

The IT department won't want macs, it will put people like me out of a job.
I see a lot of BS in this thread and a lot of people pretending to be IT who aren't. As far as someone saying windows server 2008 is rock solid...I completely disagree.
And whoever thinks Dell has great enterprise support I absolutely 100% disagree. Their support is freaking terrible and I love how they try and claim that they can't cover servers under warranty if the server is at an APO address. Dell is too stupid to realize any APO address, regardless of where it is at in the world is U.S. soil. /rant
Anyway OP, windows generally dominates the enterprise world but it doesn't mean macs can't be used.

Well I guess not all DVDs were created equal... :D
I have quite a few (both original DVDs and CDs) that aren't working anymore... :(
Well some can't last the test of time (I've had some that stopped working myself) but, as long as from now on you get good quality media you'll be fine. :D

If Adobe priced this for $29.99 on the App Store I would buy it as a companion tool to PS CS5. But I don't think I would be using my fingers to work... I would incorporate a POGO Stylus.
What would be cool is if you could tap your left index finger and then the POGO to enable a "right click" for options.
I would be even more interested in an Illustrator for the iPad!
What I still want though is to be able to shoot tethered to an iPad. Has anyone heard of an app that will allow me to instantly see what I just shot with a tethered DSLR?

What did you do to make your HD show the size of your HD and how much you have free?
Hit command-j at the desktop and you'll get something that looks like this. Check 'Show Item Info' and you're good to go. :)
jeffzoom91: someone's familiar with TonyMac's site. *grin*
