For the love of God, will they please fix the bug that causes any wall, photo, or comment posts to slow to a crawl if you haven't reinstalled the Facebook app in some time.

    Any one else notice this?

Example: I restore my iPhone. Facebook runs like a sprint horse fresh out of the gate. Posting status updates, wall comments, photo comments, friend requests, etc.. are all snappy. Then after about a week things start taking longer to post. The spinner lasts much longer on the screen. Then by week 4, trying to post a simple status update cripples the app to the point that you have to hit the Home button on the iPhone. Meanwhile, even though your spinner is processing, that status update has already updated on their servers for others to see.

Excellent description of the problem! I also submitted this as a bug in the app store. I guess time will show if they've fixed it in the latest version.

You can't boot XP from CD on a Mac. You can't you can't you can't. The Mac boots using EFI, which XP doesn't support.

You need to use Boot Camp to install it, as legacy BIOS emulation has to be loaded specifically for XP.

if i am not mistaken the bios emulator (or whatever allows xp and the new vista build to boot from BIOS) is in the last firmware update 1.0 or 1.1, cant remeber the number... you dont need boot camp to install xp or vista, but you do need BC if you want an easy way to create a drivers disc for windows...

But that's just the thing, it's not serious. At least I don't think so. A bigger deal has been made of it in this thread talking to you than any other place I've encountered. How's that for irony?

Well I've not yet appeared in the news. Note that when I talk about the rebellious crowd, I'm referring to more than just you and the peopl in this thread. There has been a total overreaction to it in the news and by 'celebrities' over the country. In any case, that's not irony.

Some time in the future when past christmas number ones are played I'll get a little smile when I hear 2009's.

I sincerely hope not. I'd rather have anything other than a poor metal track being played continually on the radio over the festive period.

Apple has to at least match the toughbook for harsher climates and conditions:
    http://www.panasonic.com/business/Toughbook/toughbook-products.asp

The military and the Army has had a "dialogue" with Apple for years... pretty much every project involving a piece of field equipment has gone to another manufacturer because of durability concerns.

That is like shouting out who, what you are all the time 24/7.

    Oh really?

The sample I see here shows a way to make a phone's games or videos interact with toys.

Another example I've read (subway farecard) would tell people that I'm subway rider 25879346 or something. I've also read about using it as a credit card, which would require a PIN number to use. Anyone can currently snap a photo of you handing a card to a cashier, so it's no different from that.

None of these are shouting out anything about who I am. If you're critisizing something else, you'll have to actually tell me what you're talking about since it hasn't been mentioned here yet.

    1. Apple is an American company. Their products get released in the US first. The US market is and should remain their primary concern. If the US is going to LTE, that's where Apple needs to go.

No offence, but I think Apple goes where most of their customers are, and if most of them are non-Americans, than that is where their priority lies.

What I am saying is - if SJ wants to sell his computer to the sub 20-year-old community, he better get his prices down. Because even though I could work my tail off at work, and earn enough money to buy a mac, a mac still might not be worth it. For example, if apple sold a dual 1.5 GHz 970 in addition to the current line-up for $10,000, it still wouldn't be worth $10,000 for me because that equates to ~1,170 hours of work for me. If I was a extremely well off person, and money wasn't an issue, the computer would be worth the money.

So, basically what I am saying is Apple needs to get down their prices in order to sell their high end systems to people who want them but don't have the highest paycheck.

I believe both the current versions of Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere Pro can edit 3D.

    Lethal

Ohh, Good call about Adobe Premiere Pro. It certainly can and seems the most price friendly option.

The current FCS can edit 3D with the Dashwood stereo 3d toolkit plugin!

    Sweet mother, $1,500 plugin!

What are people's thoughts on Sony Vegas Pro? I could run either parallels or bootcamp and my iMac more then fits the bill for these programs (27" iMac 2.93 i7, 12GB of Ram, 1GB ATI Radeon HD 5750)

Seems like a much cheaper avenue? Though I can probably find a good deal on Adobe Premiere Pro

For both the pro's and consumers who are thinking about 3D, here is a great video from Adobe:

Thing about the Laffer curve is that there was/is no research or data to back it up. Arthur Laffer pulled it out of a dark place and scribbled it down on a cocktail napkin. Its actual shape may have no actual correlation to the smooth bell we always see, it is all fiction because no one has tried to demonstrate its validity or accuracy.

    I won't disagree with you.

I believe I have seen it suggested somewhere that raising taxes puts pressure on business, which may have the effect of stimulating growth by forcing the businesses to make up the lost revenue (ramping up).

    Interesting and just as sensible.

What effect government policy has on the economy is not clear because the economy is made up of a mass of Brownian particles that move in unpredictable and befuddling ways....

And, I think this is the money quote; nice use of physics term.

While I am never going to use Places - or anything else like it - I think all these worries may be a little misplaced.

People can sit outside your home and watch to see if you are home. People can look at your lights or your windows or even send someone to knock on your door - and find out if you are home.

People were getting robbed long before Facebook.

And also - status updates like "Having fun on vacation in Hong Kong - two weeks seems too short" make it painfully obvious that you are not at home....

And even though you can set this stuff only visible to friends - and even set up groups within your friends like "trusted" and "not trusted" or "work" and "personal" and you can adjust visibility that way at a granular level - even though you can do all that: There are ways that the rest of the world can "mine" all of your posts and data.

Just assume that anything you put on facebook is visible to the entire world and will be so for the rest of time...

But I won't use Places. People I want to know where I am - I tell them.

Was it really that long ago? Time flies, eh? Anyway.... They could have added it to the Mini back then quietly and without redesigning the whole case, similar to the way that the 5th USB port was added, if it was to satisfy photographers.

And they didn't need to immediately go to the top end SDXC.... most consumer cameras aren't using those cards yet. Once the low or middle speed SD card reader was added, it would have been easy to upgrade it to the top end SD card reader in a few years when those cards were more widely used. This would have been more in line of Apple's philosophy of increasing specs and features and keeping prices down. i.e. Today's new Mini has plain SD card reader, and in a year they "add" the faster reader to make a "new" new Mini.

I think there is something more to this... we'll just have to stay tuned, eh?

It seems like alot of the folks posting on this thread haven't tried the new Macs with osX.2. I'll admit 3 weeks ago the arguements posted above may have been valid, and thats not to say that apple doesn't have to come out with faster stuff to keep up with pcs but right now the Mac is very fast and a good deal.
$1899 for a dual 867 with a dvd burner and the software is pretty close to a similar pc and the included software is a real deal.
The new Hardware is a real improvement too. 2 optical bays and 4 ide drive bays with included raid software, if you haven't installed anything in the new Macs, believe me this is the best!
I use my Macs fulltime in my audio/video studio and for me it doesn't get any better than this!
Yes Macs initially cost more but the new speed/productivity boost quickly makes up of the slight difference.
So buy an emac if you need a cheap computer, maybe not as fast as the cheap pc but more portable!
    Peace
    Daniel

Update away. Those of you running illegal copies of the WWDC (torrent) will be happy to know that your IP and other system/contact info is automatically logged and forwarded to Apple Legal by the Leopard Software Update.

"Enjoyed the preview? Good. We'll be contacting you soon..."

yeah, it would only cost them $1000+ to have someone come round to my house and do something about it, well worth the 59 they would sell the end product for

do they check everybodys IP, how do they know i wasn't at wwdc.

With the Xserve getting canned, it's likely that Apple will shift Lion server hard towards SOHO needs and further away from the needs of larger enterprise environments.

yes i agree there. osx server shall thusly be known as "Mac OSX Home Server".

I am trying to find a good sound dock for my iPhone 4 that also has a FM radio. I bought the Sony RDP-XF100iP this weekend and am not overly impressed, given the cost. It is bass-heavy with little option to adjust the top-end ranges ( cymbals, etc ) and radio reception seems a bit shaky. All of that would be fine for a sub-$100 unit, but this is pushing $200.

Can anyone recommend a good option?

    thanks in advance!
    Bill
